Winter Preparedness Planning for Extended Power Outages (1)

Holiday & General Preparedness: Resolve to Be Ready This Season

As we enter the holiday season, it’s a perfect time to revisit your personal and household preparedness plans. The winter months often bring increased risks—from severe weather to heightened online activity—making proactive planning essential for keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Holiday Safety:
The holidays are a time of celebration, travel, and online shopping—and with that comes an increase in potential hazards. Stay alert for online shopping scams, verify retailers before making purchases, and monitor bank accounts for suspicious activity. At home, practice fire safety by keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, checking smoke alarms, and ensuring holiday lights and decorations are used safely.

Build an Emergency Kit:
Preparedness begins with having the right supplies on hand. Stock up on non-perishable food and water—aim for at least one gallon of water per person per day, with a 7-day supply if possible. Include essential medications, a first-aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries, chargers, and basic tools. Don’t forget items that meet the unique needs of family members, including infants, older adults, and individuals with access or functional needs.

Make a Plan:
A solid household emergency plan ensures everyone knows what to do when minutes matter. Identify evacuation routes, designate meeting points, and practice your plan. Include pets by preparing their own emergency supplies—food, water, medication, and comfort items. Keep a written contact card with important phone numbers in case your phone is lost or out of battery.

Stay Informed:
Timely information is critical in any emergency. Sign up for local emergency alerts from trusted sources, follow official agencies on social media, and ensure your devices can receive critical notifications.

Resolve to Be Ready:
December is an ideal time to take stock of your preparedness efforts and set yourself up for a safe year ahead. Taking a few minutes to update emergency kits, review plans, and restock essential supplies can make all the difference in a crisis.

From all of us at the Coalition, we wish you a safe, healthy, and well-prepared holiday season.

At the link below, we’ve added a Measles First Steps Guide. While measles is not considered an HCID, the Region 1 RESPTC is sharing this example as a resource after a request from our last Region 1 Emerging Special Pathogens meeting. This quick-reference resource outlines key actions for healthcare and public health teams to take in the critical early hours of a suspected or confirmed measles case. It’s designed to support rapid coordination, containment, and communication.
