NHCPC Takeaways Feature #2
Each year, the CT HCC is honored to attend the National Health Care Coalition Preparedness Conference (NHCPC). This year, coalition staff were joined by multiple partners, including five members who were sponsored in their attendance via a coalition scholarship. To ensure that the full coalition can benefit from these conferences, we've asked sponsored attendees to provide some lessons they learned from educational sessions. Paul Wentworth, EMS/EM/AHA CTC Coordinator at Johnson Memorial Hospital and Emergency Management Director at Mercy Medical Center, was one of those sponsored members. We've asked him some questions about his experience, which he has answered below:
What was your favorite conference session you attended and why?
Strengthening Emergency Response: The Vital Role of Interstate Collaboration in Hospital Patient Evacuation was the presentation that provided true guidance and advise. Working on the Massachusetts/Connecticut state line with emergency planning and response duties in each state gives me a unique perspective on the importance of removing state boundaries from preparedness activities. This presentation provided techniques used in other multi-state compacts to make a cohesive response plan.
What are some lesson(s) you want to bring back to your role and/or the CT HCC?
Outstanding opportunity to network and talk to people with the same concerns we have! Everybody there was at different levels of cohesion but all shared valuable lessons. It is essential to learn from each other’s achievements and failures during each event. I believe we are missing and outstanding opportunity to learn due to fear!
Please include any additional comments/lessons learned that the group could benefit from.
Connecticut HCC is in its infancy, but as a whole is doing very well! I would attend again without hesitation. I strongly recommend we start looking at increasing the funding for this conference in 2026.
Stay tuned for more lessons learned from the NHCPC conference. For more information about how you can benefit from funding opportunities, such as conference scholarships, contact us today!
